Sundown Marathon – From Good Afternoon to Good Evening to Good Night to Good Morning
In early February 2010, I decided to run Putrajaya Night Marathon at the very last minute, as always. The week before the race, I was still not very prepared and worse of all I was down with a fever just three days before the race. I recovered well enough and thought at my 60th marathon I should be able to just complete it. However, at 15km I slowed to a walk. Way too far to walk to the finish, I have 27km more to go. I paid for the trip there, the hotel and race fee. It was my 60th marathon and I didn’t want a DNF. I walk till Azhar came and I asked him if I would be able to complete in under 6 hours to qualify for the medal, finisher’s t shirt and certificate. He assured me, YES! I must have irritated him to the bones with my constant asking every 5 seconds, “what is the pace now, how much lead do I have, will I be able to complete under 6hrs if I maintain this pace?” When I completed the marathon in 5h40m, it was then I realised that a 6hr pacer is very important. Azhar told me to sign up as a pacer for the Sundown Marathon. So, I did, to pay it forward. There must be runners who would be in the same situation like me at Putrajaya. I have never run as a pacer so I decide to apply for the same group as Azhar. Both of us became the 6hr pacers for the Sundown Marathon.
It was alot of fun at the back. We walk and run. We walked for a purpose, to run further. We stopped to take pictures, we get to know each other. We finished the marathon together. It wasn’t very difficult for me. I also had no problem with t shirt size, getting to race site on time, or getting drinks on course. I know coming in at 6 hour I may not have a finisher’s t shirt my size. I have accepted it. Luckily, someone wants to buy it from me. So, I don’t understand why other runners are so angry with the organiser.
